VALENTINE's DAY HISTORY!

HAPPY VALENTINE's DAY!
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between love ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

…..” That’s the problem of you, young generations of today! You lack moral values….” : MIGO

Last week, I was with my comrade Esmael and Myra. We were taking our ride in a rustic multicab going back home when it stopped along bankerohan (again?!) and all of a sudden an old fashioned aged man who is never without an outmoded fedora, an attaché case, a long cane and a 70’s looking apparel yelled “ MOVE! MOVE MOVE!” . He was pertaining to the woman who was seated at the latter part of the vehicle. I observed that the woman didn’t mind the old man for a longer time but eventually moved to her annoyance. The old man kept on blathering “ Don’t you underestimate me! Because I’m old already? You are underestimating me?......” My companions and I whispered to each other talking about what was going on
“ tubaga Esnael para mutolo ang dugo sa ilong hehehe” , when the man shouted “ Hey! I am talking here and you keep on murmuring there?! You are going to school but you are acting like an uneducated one? mga mal educado!.......” Of course, we were shocked and had nothing done but silence. We never thought that he could hear our undertone whispers. He was still having his homily when two young ladies discreetly leaped in the jeepney and took their seats. Surprisingly, the old man didn’t give them an escape of his sermon “ Why won’t you be courteous enough to say Hi Sir! Hi mad’am! Good evening……..” That’s the problem of you young generations of today! You lack moral values….” The two ladies haven’t done anything but quiet. When we were about to reach San Pedro Church the old man observed that the jeepney was not passing to its right route as what he was expecting. “ Dila pala to R Castillo?! Kasi akalo ko R. Castillo to eh! Baba mo nalang ako jan sa may eskena! He told the driver. The vehicle continued its motion “ You do not understand eskena? Huh! The old man shouted …………..” All passengers screamed “ ilugar lang dira kay munaog na siya” until the jeepeney ceased its movement and the old man was about to step down “ agi ake agi ake ache ache che” he speeched and he was finally out of our sight. At last haaayyy!!!! All passengers celebrated yeheheheehyy!!! Clap clap clap! One passenger knew him and revealed that the man is a psychotic one. Mmmhhh!!” kaya pla” we uttered.

I guess that incident served as a preparation for us because next week we will gonna have our psychiatric nursing exposure(heheeh) and of course we will be handling patients with different mental problems. At least we already had a foretaste on our future patients huh! Hehehe. .. But in fairness, despite the old man’s redundant speeches all he was saying was never nonsense. He got points , very valid points.! It served as an eye-opener for everyone to give respect to older people specially in public places, to show pure filipino ethics and upbringings.

YUN LANG!

With the price of education increases, along with the costs of basic commodities, education has become a privilege accorded only to the elite whose parents are financially capable of subsidizing their children’s stay in college. This circumstance reflects the dilemma of students every year. We have observed a lot of rapidly ended dreams brought about by tuition fee increases, poverty and other untoward state of affairs caused by various factors beyond our control. On the other hand, what if, despite the increased costs of education, the quality of such remains poorer to pre-determined standards of higher learning? What happened if the students feel shortchanged? What happens when quality of education is compromised?

Last Friday when I was waiting for a jeepney to school a neighbor of mine who goes to same school called me and said “ sabay nalang ta, kay magtaxi man ko”. Of course without any hesitation I relplied “ sige ba, basta ikaw bayad hehehe”. When we were on our way mounting in a taxi she picked up her cellphone from her bag and called up one of her classmate. The conversations were obviously needless things. My soliloquy said “ tibaya oi! Tawag2x lng man! Ako wa man gain pampalit ug cp hehehe”. When we reached the school, I just needed to run to another building since her class was in the main building and mine was supposed to be in the oncology building. When I was on my halfway, I saw handful of my classmates walking toward me. “ Sa main nadaw atong classroom” said one of them. To my surprise I said “ unsa naman puy drama aning DDc huh?!” On that moment, I knew that all classes were transferred to fully air-conditioned rooms. Of course with that I was pleased, but when we reached the building a huge banner surprised me “ 10% Tuition Fee Increase”….Can we really say we are getting our money’s worth? We know our jaws dropped when we realized we had to pay more than thirty five thousand pesos for a semester alone. This does not include whatever additional miscellaneous fees we also have to pay whenever we are assigned to out based locations. I mean air-conditioned rooms cannot suffice students need for a better learning. Instead of purchasing a state of the arts personal computers ( flat screen nasad among pc sa lib huh!,) aircons etc. I’m not saying not to upgrade facilities but I have just seen that there are other aspect of learning that needs to be given attention than that. Why won’t they focus on their teaching system and on hiring competent clinical instructors to achieve school’s VMG as making students globally competitive, research oriented and etc. I mean, it has been already understood that clinical instructors are not trained as teachers, thus what to be expected of an education degree holder is not to be expected from nurses who just happened to be imparting their knowledge and skills to aspiring nurses. But then again, this should not be made as a legitimate excuse for them to consistently fall short of pre determined learning standard. But, in fairness the're still CI's who are very good which I can only count with my single hand!

My resentment exacerbate when last Monday our whole class had the self-awareness activities in the sky gymnasium. Never mind the expected warm place since it was a clammy day. What made me irritated was that when we reached the place a fuckin heck of rusty busted obsolete chairs dumbfounded us. Before you can seat an extensive clean up will be your foremost task! My gush! Do we deserve these heck!?? Hence, I am shouting out for a GLOBALLY COMPETETIVE TEACHERS and an OKAY CHAIRS Yun lanG! And if you can not give it mmhhh!

"TONg itS": CELEBRATE like ADLAWAN CLAN!

(from left to right: Uncle dodong, kenjay, ai2x, dai2x, Odlazer)

Like most Filipino families, ADLAWAN clan is fond of celebrating. Any little occasion calls for a festivity, birthdays, christenings, graduations, weddings, arrival from out of the city and all kinds of anniversary. Different occasions call for various ways of celebrating. But there are certain elements always present, the happy and festive atmosphere expressed through unity. The big voice of uncle Largo, the funny jokes of uncle Undoy, the dance sessions of Ai2x and Dai2x, ang mga naglalarong pamangkin, umiiyak na bata, ang puto at kutchinta ni aunt Gloria, ang luto ni Martina, ang lechon ni aunt Cecil, ang videoke sa taga toril, ang billaran sa ulas, ang mga madadramang tagpo sa mga alam mo na,at mga bagong tsismis doon(hehe), the loud mouth of nanay bebing stating " Tama na nana! kay manguli nata kay sayo pami mangabri ugma!" and the sarcastic reply of my beloved Father saying " ahh! unya na sayo pa bitaw wa pa nakuha ang hiittteer!.Hay! naku!?) Each of these makes the celebration memorable. There are always some hassles, but all these are put aside during celebration time.
Even though were on an immense crisis nowadays the food and drinks are an important part of any celebration. They will never be left out, one will make sure saving a little to serve something. For big celebrations, we will go through great lengths to prepare the best, and to make sure that the dining table is overflowing with all kinds of food, simple yet scrumptious. However, behind those foods and etc. with the most of my uncles as well as my father they only need chair, table and a deck of card to have a ball! and they will now play “tong its” like there’s now tomorrow (hehehe)…… Anyway, Please check some pictures of ours during one of our gatherings.
